So a funny thing happened on my way to bed last night. I was doing my usual thing of winding down and taking one last look at BG on my way out. There had been some fun earlier today and I wanted to see if the conversation continued at all.
Suddenly, what do my eyes see? A new thread in my Media section called Go Team Derp! Episode 4: Womp Womp.
Yeah. Like... Suddenly my twitter feed is sort of in my BG. I click the thread and am completely unsurprised to see a banned user avatar, with their post count reading 4. Two of those posts were the exact same thing posted in both the XI and XIV section.
This is awkward because I "know" one of the people on the cast, sort of. I am aware of them, I should say. Seems weird that they would give an OK to go and do something like that, though. I mean, do any of them read BG? They obviously don't post there, and the account they used was registered August 2011. All of the posts are dated yesterday. How was this a good idea? Why would you show up unannounced and partially uninvited to a notoriously rough crowd and just spew links and copy/pasted advertisements in a new thread? Maybe they thought someone would go listen? Hell, I did. I wanted to know what their "Drama Lama (sic)" section was all about, and it's sadly just a meek poking of fun at the Official Forums. Just like the several-hundred pages on BG.
Well, not quite. I was hoping for something neat out of it but instead a bunch of hype of "They're going to haaaaaate us!" and the like only for them to... defend My Little Pony? How raucous. I personally feel that no matter the merits of the show, the fanbase has ruined any enjoyment I might have gotten out of it. Too many "bronies" and the like posting their rehashed memes everywhere, just doesn't sit well with me. Am I going to get poked in a podcast now?
That's sort of the amusing thing about it. They can't really be upset about this, can they? If they are, does that mean I am justified in putting together my own podcast with a section called "Drama Llama" wherein I get to verbally assault a podcast crew who got offended at being banned? Layers upon layers, man.
The strange thing is, the user was banned but the thread was unlocked. Normally those threads get left out as a warning for anyone else dumb enough to treat BG like a signboard, but they get locked. So of course I posted in it. Someone wondered why it merited a ban, and I postulated something that was either correct or just extra motivation.
I'm only active on BG in the media sections. I don't know the math well enough, people who ask for gear advice and the like are better suited to be answered by the guys who can also provide the mathematical solutions to the problem. I tend to stick to dramatic subjects like the gimp thread and lately, the Official Forums stuff. I don't post on the OF but I do like to chime in and stir the pot. My inner elitist (and outer, I guess, given my post right here) appreciates the outlet; Ridicule the ridiculous and don't have to worry about the inevitable flame war or anything.
That's something else that's amusing me: Getting offended by this sort of post or BG's reaction would prove hypocrisy, given how it's okay to make fun of someone for "not getting it" on one side of the coin but unfair/mean/whatever on the other side. If you're going to pick apart someone in the community, you're not allowed to be upset when someone else does the same to you.
Of course, this might have just been a ploy to get hits, which hey, I went and gave a (brief) listen. Skimmed until curiosity was satisfied, but now there's a lingering question of how they'll react to it, and who knows, maybe I'll skim Episode 5 for it. A victory I suppose, however unintended it might have been.
Hell, if I'm ranting, I might as well go for the gold.
Who the hell names their linkshell/team/crew Team Derp? "Derp" is not a compliment. It isn't funny in an amusing or ironic way. Here's a list of synonyms:
Team Stupid Mistake
Team Retards
Team Stupid Face
Team Fail
You might as well call your shell Team Autist or something. It is not a compliment, it is not funny, it is not original, even. D.E.R.P. is a Carby shell that's been around for a long while. I guess if you've got a running joke about making stupid mistakes or something...? I don't know what any of their gear looks like or how capable they are but it certainly makes for some interesting lines. It all goes back to that damned Drama Lama (sic) section.
There is no public standard for making fun of someone, especially when they're plucked at random. The BG threads are basically "Gimp is gimp, fail is fail." Someone wearing full pink at 90? No excuses, that's gimp. Killing too fast and pushing +2 or Empy items out of the pool? Fail is fail.
When you open the door to making fun of other people, as I mentioned and am now returning to because it is late and I'm rambling, other bodies can pass through. If I call out someone for being retarded for a choice in game, I've given permission to everyone else to do the same to me. To be upset with it would be a bullshit double standard.
It really doesn't matter though. Like I said, they got their hit and view from me. If it gets particularly dramatic, they'll probably get one from me in the future. I like conflict so this works for me.
Still don't know how they thought this was a good idea though. Clearly, it was anticipated and the account was on a proxy or public IP and this was all according to plan.
This is Orophen here. I know this is probably going to get more hate from you anyway, but those posts in BG resulted from a misunderstanding with one of our members who took it upon himself to do that. Since then, I posted an apology on the BG forums and explained what happened since it's one of the communities I actually do respect. Probably not the brightest idea to do that, but I felt I needed to do it. The last thing I want is for our group to be thought of in the way that you seemed to have labeled us.
ReplyDeleteBut I can't say that I blame you for taking this stance. Of course it was spam. There's no way neither I nor Calaera would think it was a good idea to do that. It's not the kind of publicity we wanted in the end. Regardless about what you might think about us and our podcast, it's done and there's not much we can do about it. I'm not going to make this situation into anything drama worthy, and advertising our podcast like that won't be happening at any point in time ever again. I apologize for intruding upon your space here and this will be my only comment about this on your blog. Just wanted to clear up any misconceptions you might have about us regarding this.
